I got an ipod and calling all sports fans.

Palm tree
The kids go back to school today and I am grateful. Another day with the three of them and their assorted friends and I think I would be carted off to the looney bin. I love being a mom, but Lord I have my limits. How on earth do people home school?

Hanukkah was nice. I got an ipod!! *insert woman dancing around and singing at the top of her lungs with music only she can hear* On the down side, Aaron Brown is not back on tv yet, so I will have to assume Santa Clause is not real.

Let see, what else did I do instead of posting for two weeks? Oh yeah, I took an 'indoor' snowboarding class where they taught me on a moving rug hill. It was a lot of fun and I hope to try it out on actual snow this month. It has been really dry here in California so there hasn't been snow in the mountains until this week. Then there was a deluge. This state really is an all or nothing kinda place.

Any sports fans out there? I haven't followed any sports for years, but for the sake of my sons I have vowed to follow baseball (the least objectional sport) this coming season. I would love to have a fellow flister along for the ride.

Well, I will not make a ridiculous resolution to post more this year. I tried it last year and it lasted a few month,s but it didn't seem to do any good from either the author or reader perspective, so instead this year I will post in the usual manner - haphazardly or on Fridays (which ever comes first).

Have a lovely day Flist and happy New Year to my more than virtual friends!

Happy New Year, Hawaii!

Oooh... you must have been a good girl last year getting an iPod from Santa!

The indoor snowboarding class sounds as if it was a lot of fun. Are we going to get pictures of you snow boarding in the mountains shorly, I hope? :)

It was nice to learn the very basics on the nice warm and dry rug. This way when I get to the snow I will have an advantage even though i will proabbly sign up for a learner's class anyway.

I think standing up as I snowboard will be enough without trying to photograph myself at the same time. LOL. I have been skiing for years but I still don't have great balance so I think this whole new sport will be even less successful. But it does look like fun when I watch others do it so i have really wanted to give it a try.

Happy New Year, sweetie!

An Ipod, that is wonderful!!!!

I hate sports...doing and watching. Sorry can't help you there...

I don't do resolutions either, I always want to loose a few pounds but when I've lost them, I start eating so bad that they gain within a few weeks. I can't help myself. This way it will stay a problem for the rest of my life. *sigh*

That's okay, being Dutch and all, I really didn't think you were the likeliest candidate to be my babseball flisty friend. :P

Still, if you ever decide you want to follow American baseball, you let me know. ;)

Congrats on the nifty new ipod!

Along with the songs, I am really hip to try podcasts. I downloaded one from Slate magazine already and there is so much to chose from. The screen is a little small to watch a tv show even though some are available, but wouldn't it be nice to choose in the car which NPR interview to hear or even which comedy routine off of the Comedy Channel (I bet the Daily show is even funny without the pics)?

Ooooh, more SQUEEE-ing for the iPod! I'm hoping for one for my birthday this spring. And even the snowboarding class! I'm not much of a skier, but that did sound fun! Oh, and I am SO with you on the kids. My brood doesn't start back 'til Thursday and I'm not sure being able to sleep in a bit offsets the absolutely insanity that is ruling my house. LOL!

Now let's see... sports. Me, I'm personally an NFL fan and, believe it or not, a NASCAR fan. But then being a born and bred southerner, that's been part of Sundays for as long as I can remember. I'm not a huge baseball fan, but my husband is a *rabid* Cub's fan, so I tend to see a lot of it whether I want to or not. Helpful, huh? ;)

Sometimes I am convinced that school vacations are some sort of plot to keep women down. I mean two weeks of school vacation must translate into something like a loss of 12-15 IQ points, right? Sure, you get them back, but then there's summer vacation.....

I'm personally an NFL fan and, believe it or not, a NASCAR fan.

I used to watch football growing up and in my early twenties (as I did baseball) but now that we are at the end of that season it seems a bit late to chose football, so I'm going with baseball. I was a Mets fan for years but out here I think it makes most sense to make my sons Padre fans. I like the Cubs a bit myself. Like their sister city team the White Sox, I have a soft spot for teams that lose (I am the exact opposite most fans, I always find losing teams more attractive).

NASCAR I don't understand. You drive too fast, you crash. That's a sport?

I am at that point in life where I hurt for day regardless of the activity so it least it shouyld be for something worthwhile. :)

I find those "he's got the ball/puck, no, he's got the ball/puck, nope he's got the ball/puck" sports a bit boring. But being Canadian doesn't absolve you from being my baseball fan cohort. You've got 'em up there too.

Enjoy the iPod and the snowboarding. It sounds like fun, but I'd kill myself taking one trip down the hill. I'm a worldclass klutz.

I like Baseball...in a sort of distant, yes, I like to know who won, but don't expect me to sit and watch it sort of way, so I'm afraid I won't be much help. Sorry.

Yeah, that's been my take on the whole sports thing too for the last twenty years, but as my boys are seriously risking being uncool (they know even less than I do about sports. I don't even think they know the rules for baseball) I have decided to intervene and help. Hubby is just not the sports type at all so it is sadly up to me. The fact that Keith olberman does a sports show as well as the news, so that might make it less painful. I'm hoping (he is kinda funny).

Do you get the Speedvision cable channel? If so I recommend you follow Formula 1 auto racing for your chosen sport *grin* That is the only sport I follow. The reasons why:

1) once the action starts, it doesn't stop or slow down for anything until it is done

2) there are only 19 races each year spread out from March till October - it is possible to watch every single one - and they are all on Sunday

3) there are only 10 teams with 2 drivers each so it is possible to be up on all the team players

4) most of the drivers are cute!

5) the races are all over the world from Australia to the Middle East to Europe so you can pretend it has a cultural twist...lol

6) you would have me to discuss it with!

I'd love to have the time to follow something like baseball but there are too many teams, too many games and too many players...it's impossible to get a grasp on the sport without serious time dedication. So that's why I like Formula 1. Plus I like that it's not so well known here but insanely popular everywhere else in the world. I have a friend on my flist in Singapore that's a huge fan and another in Finland, also a big fan.

Well, you sold me. ;P Reminds me of the days when I used to pick which football team I would root for based on a combination of whose team had the cutest quarterback and the nicest uniforms (I it was some sort of abstract point system that only my brain understood).

I'll have to see if I can catch one of those races in March and see if I like it. I always viewed racing like boxing - a sport that exists only beause there are fans who like to see people get hurt. Sort of like Roman gladiators for the new millenium. Don't they crash into walls and eachother a lot? Or is that just NASCAR?

No no no, not at all. Occassionally, as with any sport, there are injuries. Driving cars at such fast speeds can be very dangerous so of course there are accidents and crashes but there are so many safety precautions that most drivers just up and walk away. All of the drivers are top atheletes in most excellent shape and I think this helps. It probably doesn't seem like much effort on their part but really it is physically draining on their bodies and they do have to be in as good physical shape as any other athlete. I guarantee they have to work out more and be in better shape than most baseball players in order to do their job.

Oh I forgot to mention another attraction to the sport...no race lasts any longer than 2 hours. Once they start, they do not stop and if two hours has passed and the race isn't completed, they end the race. I only saw this happen once...it was pouring rain and cars weren't able to drive as fast as they normally would. But unlike Nascar...neither rain nor sand nor accidents stop or slow down a Formula 1 race. They just keep going.

I fell in love with the sport watching the Monte Carlo race. They race through the streets of the town and it is the coolest thing ever. That one is in May. It's a good one to watch.

That certainly does seem a bit better than just racing around a circle. I will have to see if my cable gets this sport. My youngest loves things like NASCAR (though he has never actually seen a race) and monster trucks and all that kind of stuff. We think he might have been switced at birth. ;P
